Fostering a Safe and Secure Auburn for Everyone
As an advocate for public safety and community well-being in Auburn, I have always believed that ensuring the safety of our residents is not just a duty but a commitment to the future of our city. Public safety is at the core of a thriving community, and its importance cannot be overstated. Auburn’s Current Safety Landscape
Auburn is a growing city with diverse needs and concerns regarding public safety. In recent community conversations, residents highlighted issues such as gun violence, homelessness, theft, gang activity, and the need for greater police presence.[1] Understanding these challenges is the first step towards finding effective solutions.
The Auburn Police Department strives to serve our community diligently, yet I believe there is room for improvement. As part of my campaign, I am committed to transparent communication and increased community engagement to build trust and ensure accountability for all public safety efforts.
Building Trust and Transparency
Transparency is a cornerstone of a reliable and effective public safety strategy. By notifying the city council when new officers are sworn in and promoting community engagement through police participation in public events and open houses, we can build stronger relationships with residents.
Our city’s recent efforts include the implementation of block watch programs, surveillance systems, and increased police presence in key areas to deter crime and strengthen community ties.[1]
Personal Connection to Auburn’s Safety Concerns
On the city council, I supported the initiative to ban smoking and vaping in parks. This ordinance was an essential step forward in promoting a healthier environment for our youth, ensuring public safety, and aligning with our Healthy Auburn Blue Ribbon Committee goals.[2] This initiative demonstrated our collective commitment to a safe and healthy Auburn.
Action Plan for a Safer Auburn
- Community Policing Approach: Implement a proactive community policing strategy that involves residents directly in crime prevention. Regular community meetings and forums will be held to discuss safety concerns and collaborative solutions.
- Increase Support Services: Expand investments in social services and mental health resources to provide support for individuals at risk and to address root causes of crime and homelessness.
- Enhanced Youth Programs: Develop programs targeting youth engagement to provide positive alternatives to gangs and crime, focusing on education, sports, and community service opportunities.
